The potted garden

Not everyone has a backyard, or even a courtyard (myself included!).  Its incredibly frustrating as a garden lover not to have access to your own garden, but after years of renting I have to say the potted garden is definitely the next best thing.  Even the smallest space can be enhanced with a container garden, however as with all garden design there are a few little rules to follow to ensure your potted garden is a success.

As I say to all my clients, find something in a magazine or an image on Pinterest that you really love and start from there.  It might be a colour scheme or a style or particular plant, it doesn’t matter as long as you have some kind of loose plan to work with and a design direction to follow.

Below are just a few tips to follow when creating your own potted garden  The great part about container gardening is that you can always change things around and most importantly take them with you!

Plants should be sized to the pot & pots should be sized to the site. Small plants will be lost in a large pot, just as small pots will be lost on a large deck.

Statement pots are best shown off with a simple plant and flamboyant plants are likewise highlighted best with a simple pot. Too much of both is hard on the eye and will look too busy.

Unless you are making a succulent container or pretty annual display, sometimes its better to have one species of plant per pot. Repetition will result in a unified composition.

For a harmonious and tranquil potted garden keep to one or two colours in different shades. Succulents look beautiful in blue, grey & green pots

For a dramatic impact use contrasting colours on the colour wheel like purple and orange.

To make a focal point, group pots of the same colour or same size for a unified look. Group more planters in the same place to soften the harsh edges of a building, and to give it a more natural touch.

There are many pot products that mimic the appearance of heavier materials such as stone and concrete. Fibreglass is great for large garden pots that need to be moved around easily and are just as attractive as the real deal like these pots from Pop & Scott

Using similar colours & textures will create a very stylish and unified composition

You can’t go wrong with geraniums in terracotta pots for instant colour and greenery – the Italians have been swearing by it for centuries!

Don’t forget the house pot plant – succulents are the perfect inside friends requiring very little maintenance

An unusual planter with succulents makes quite the conversation piece
